Sidra Medical & Research Centre is a world-class healthcare facility in Qatar that opened in 2015. The state-of-the-art hospital features some of the most advanced medical technology and equipment available, as well as a wide range of unique construction materials used in its construction.

One of the new materials used in Sidra is metal, including various stainless steel finishes and aluminum products. Stainless steel has exceptional corrosion resistance, making it withstand exposure to harsh environments, such as extreme temperatures. Doha is always high temperature, but the stainless steel material will ensure the structure can be used for a long time.

In addition, the stainless steel finish exhibits remarkable strength and durability, making it capable of withstanding heavy loads and impacts without deforming or breaking easily. This material offers excellent hygiene standards due to its non-porous surface that prevents the growth of bacteria or other pathogens on its surface.

The most notable feature is its facade, which comprises over 10,000 individual panels of fritted glass. As we know, Dubai has a tropical desert climate, and the sunshine is very harsh all year round. Therefore, the glass panels are designed to filter out the intense desert sun while allowing natural light into the building. Nay, it also helps to reduce heat gain and protect against the sun’s harmful UV rays. The glass is also tinted to provide privacy for patients and staff.

Another unique architectural material is terrazzo. Terrazzo is a type of flooring made from marble or granite chips set in concrete. It is commonly used in high-traffic areas because it is scratched-resistant, durable, and easy to maintain.

Ductal® is another main material of Sidra construction, which is solid and durable yet lightweight and flexible enough to be used in various applications. The thermal and acoustic properties of Ductal® make it ideal for use in hospitals, where noise levels need to be kept to a minimum. Additionally, it is resistant to fire, mold, and bacteria, making it a safe choice for healthcare environments. Sidra Medical and Research Centre is aimed to provide patients with the best possible care in an environment that is both beautiful and functional.

The roof of the building is made from a particular type of aluminum called ‘super-thermal,’ which has excellent heat-reflective properties. This helps to keep the building cool in summer and warm in winter.

In addition to these unique materials, Sidra also features several sustainable design elements. The hospital has a grey water recycling system recycles water from sinks and showers for irrigation and other non-potable uses. The hospital also has an onsite power plant that produces electricity using natural gas from Qatar’s North Field gas field.

The construction of the Sidra Medical & Research Centre has been a unique and pioneering project in healthcare infrastructure. By using innovative materials, such as steel-framed panels and precast concrete, the architects created an impressive building that can easily withstand the rigors of time and use.
